Unlike many of the houses that sit in the Spiral, the home of Kellan and Erian stands in one of the few areas with a low crime rate - a rate that has remained low simply because of the lack of houses in the vicinity. A lone and free standing home, which is a rare occurrence in the Spiral, the Sanctuary is a humble house, complete with two floors - inherited by Kellan Braeburn from the elderly lady that took him into her care after the tragic death of his mother.
If taken at face value, the home is a simple and humble one. A small concrete stair welcomes visitors to the door, fashioned from thick and sturdy wood. But once one enters the home, it becomes quite clear that it has been modified with safety in mind. The reverse side of the door is adorned with three different locks - a chain, and two regular locks, one which requires a key, and another that functions with a simple turn from the inside.
Another one of the noticeable features found inside of the house are the doors of metal bars that are folded beside the windows of both the ground floor and the first, which are shut over the locked windows at night to prevent intruders breaking in the only ways that they can - via doors and windows.
The home appears clean inside. In the front living room, a sofa, a pair of arm chairs, and a tall shaded lamp huddle around a rather large coffee table, littered with towers of books, their covers bent and creased, some faded, their colours dull and washed out after years of use.
A fistful of pencils and biros dance about mounds of notebooks, some threaded into wire coils to hold them in place, the surface of the table unseen beneath everything that smothers it. The floor is covered with a dark blue carpet, which everything in the room sit upon.
The kitchen is half as large as the living room. Another table, traditionally made for eating breakfast upon, is also infected with reading material, the spread out novels laid out around the places used for dining. The kitchen units are a simple cream in colour, and one of the only places not plagued by books. A kettle sits underneath a row of cupboards filled with cans, plates, glasses and cups. The floor is half tiled, and half carpet - the carpet placed underneath the dining table.
The stairs, found in the living room, has a stair running carpet, the same dark blue in both the living room and the landing above. Four doors can be found after climbing the stairs.
The bathroom is located straight ahead, at the top of the landing. Like the kitchen, the floor is tiled, dotted here and there with rugs to prevent slipping after clambering out of the bath. Above the sink lies a mirror, and just below it runs a long shelf which holds the likes of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, and a few books, their age visible by their paperback facades. The toilet is located on the opposite side of the room, and upon the window sill lies yet more books, and a few spare bottles of conditioner, and a small number of soap bars.
Kellan's bedroom is the first door in the hall, and found on the left.
All the books found in other rooms added together don't even come to half of the number found in Kellan's quarters. Books are stacked against walls where the shelves refuse to hold any more, hidden underneath the framework of the bed, and even the top of the stout chest of drawers found at the foot of his resting place is covered with hard and paperbacks alike. The bedsheets are folded over at the bottom of the bed, and sitting over the head, hanging from the pale peppermint coloured wall, is a framed, dog-eared piece of paper. It had once been folded into quarters, the scored lines flourishing across the fragile material to distort the words that had been written upon it.
Erian's bedroom is the next one along in the corridor. Only a little smaller than Kellan's, Erian's room is half painted in a calming shade of purple, more blue than red in the top half of the room. The bottom half in wallpaper, a nice textured pattern of a different shade of lilac. A thick heap of sketch pads sit upon the small desk, with cases of pencils and paints beside it or perched atop the chair tucked underneath, ready to be picked up and put to use.
A humble pile of books sit on the opposite side of the blank spiral-bound pads, put to shame by the magnitude found in Kellan's sleeping quarters. A wooden wardrobe stands in the corner, the handles made of metal, ready to be pulled to grant the owner access to their belongings.
The fourth and final room is the smallest on the first floor. A simple spare bedroom, complete with bookshelves, a small and empty wooden chest of drawers, and a covered single bed, a window positioned against the wall where the bed leans.
